Catalytic Converter

Removal

NOTE: Exhaust fasteners are of a torque prevailing design. Use only new fasteners with the same part number as the original. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of exhaust components.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
    Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).
  1. Remove the HO2S .
    Refer to: Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (303-14A Electronic Engine Controls - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the RH front halfshaft.
    Refer to: Front Halfshaft RH (205-04 Front Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS).
    Refer to: Catalyst Monitor Sensor (303-14A Electronic Engine Controls - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).

  1. NOTICE: Do not excessively bend or twist the exhaust flexible pipe. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the flexible pipe.

    Support the exhaust flexible pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint.
    General Equipment : Cable Ties

Installation

  1. NOTICE: Failure to tighten the catalytic converter manifold fasteners in 20 Nm increments until reaching final torque of 55 Nm will cause the converter to develop an exhaust leak.

    NOTE: Install a new gasket, catalytic converter assembly and new fasteners. Tighten the bolt and 4 nuts in the sequence shown, in 3 stages.

    1. Stage 1:
      Torque : 20 Nm
    1. Stage 2:
      Torque : 40 Nm
    1. Stage 3:
      Torque : 55 Nm
  1. Torque : 48 Nm

  1. NOTICE: Do not excessively bend or twist the exhaust flexible pipe. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the flexible pipe.

    Remove the cable ties, support wrap or suitable splint from the exhaust flexible pipe.
    1. Torque : 50 Nm
    1. Torque : 25 Nm
    1. Torque : 48 Nm
    1. Torque : 24 Nm
  1. Install the Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS).
    Refer to: Catalyst Monitor Sensor (303-14A Electronic Engine Controls - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).
  1. Install the RH front halfshaft.
    Refer to: Front Halfshaft RH (205-04 Front Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).
  1. Torque : 10 Nm
  1. Install the HO2S .
    Refer to: Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (303-14A Electronic Engine Controls - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).
    1. Fill the transmission/transaxle to the correct fluid level. For Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, refer to Transmission Fluid Level Check.

    1. For Manual Transmission/Transaxle, refer to Transaxle Draining and Refilling.
