03/20/2004 - 03/21/2004 Delmarva road trip

Kris & I took a trip down the Delmarva and stayed in Lewes, DE. We toured all over the area, driving to some of the local small towns. The Delmarva RR history is one that I am very interested in, as I had hoped to once model it in my apartment. Here's some of the stuff we saw along the way.

Monument commemorating the First Dutch Colony
Text reads: "ERECTED BY THE STATE OF DELAWARE, TO COMMEMORATE THE SETTLEMENT ON THIS SPOT OF THE FIRST DUTCH COLONY. UNDER DE VRIES, A.D. 1631, HERE WAS THE CRADLING OF A STATE. "THAT DELAWARE EXISTS AS A SEPARATE COMMONWEALTH IS DUE TO THIS COLONY" BANCROFT. This monument is located in the West end of Lewes, on Front St./Pilottown Rd., on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

From Letters From Camp Rehoboth website : "The Dutch established the original settlement as a whaling station in 1631. Those first Dutch settlers were massacred within a year by the Lenni Lenape Indians because of disputes over the Dutch coat of arms the settlers were displaying. "

RR Bridge crossing the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal
Going East from the monument above, we come to a fairly modern pivot bridge. Located on the East side of Lewes, on Gills Neck Rd.

Track coming from the other direction
In this photo you can see the dual bell cranks mounted on concrete to the left. Most likely were used to operate a switch (gone) from a remote tower nearby.

Evidence of the switch was still there.

This track is in good shape now.
WWII Towers
During the War, German submarines attacked allied vessels off the coast the US. Here in Lewes (and along other nearby beaches) bunkers and tall concrete towers were constructed as observation posts. They still stand today, as a silent reminder to that era.
WWII Towers
Closer. I imagine that would have been a terribly boring and tedious job of looking out into open ocean all day watching for a sub to pop above water.
WWII Towers
I wonder if they ever spotted any subs?
