Symptom Chart: Automatic Transmission

Diagnostics in this manual assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices.
REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).

In most circumstances the PCM sets a DTC to help guide with diagnostics. Refer to the DTC Chart before using the Symptom Chart. The Condition column lists the vehicle condition. The Possible Source column lists a detailed vehicle condition. The Action column lists the action to be performed to determine the cause of the condition. Each action lists the components that can cause the system and the individual components in that system. The components are listed in order of disassembly. Use the list of components and the required action to focus on disassembly inspections for the root cause of the concern.

Pinpoint Test(s)

Clutch Shudder on Acceleration from Stop

Normal operation and Fault Conditions

As with any dry clutch-equipped vehicle, a certain amount of clutch shudder during acceleration from a stop is normal. Contamination of the friction surface can cause excessive shudder and requires clutch replacement.

Possible Sources

PINPOINT TEST A : CLUTCH SHUDDER ON ACCELERATION FROM STOP`
A1   PERFORM ADAPTIVE LEARNING PROCEDURES
  • NOTE: New and recently reset clutches may exhibit elevated levels of clutch shudder for several hundred miles.

    Perform Clutch Adaptive Learning.
REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning (307-01 Automatic Transmission - Vehicles With: 6-Speed PowerShift Transmission - DPS6/6DCT250, General Procedures).
  • Attempt to duplicate shudder event.

Is the concern still present?

Yes GO to A2
No Vehicle is working as designed. No further action is required.

A2   RECORD TRANSMISSION DATA
  • Using a scan tool, monitor the following Parameter Identifier using Datalogger Function ISS_A_RAW.
  • Using the Playback Feature slide, place it over the area of the shudder event .
  • Slide the Line Position bar from the HIGH point of the reading (record RPM reading ) back to the next closest Low point ( Record RPM ).
  • Subtract the LOW reading from the HIGH Reading-(EXAMPLE-1450-1175= 275).

Is the difference between the LOW and HIGH readings less than 250RPM

Yes Vehicle is working as designed. No further action is required.
No PERFORM the leak test.
