The Georgetown Branch: Gallery: 01_01_03-demolition New Years day demolition session. Ripped out lots of paneling, drywall, and ceiling. Uncovered much debris from addition on to outside of house. Also got a first good look at the empty space where my layout will go - very exciting. (* For the sake of simplicity, we'll refer to east, west, north & south in relation to the room layout plan with north being the top.) Click on a thumbnail/link to view large image. |

01_01_03-demolition_01.jpg So far I've removed a few panels to the right and behind the corner. You can see the faux wood paneling throughout the room and around the HVAC unit & water heater to the left. All of the paneling is to be removed. Viewpoint is from the doorway to the east. |
01_01_03-demolition_02.jpg Taking a few steps into the room, now looking southeast. View is of area under stairs where helix will most likely be located. Lineoleum tiles on floor. |
01_01_03-demolition_03.jpg Now standing in area below stairs, looking northwest. View of HVAC unit / water heater cabinet, window. Top left corner is support beam for house as well as heating / air conditioning duct. |
01_01_03-demolition_04.jpg Looking northeast towards electrical cabinet and kitchen drain pipe. Cabinet is a major consideration in planning as one must have easy access to it. I am planning a lift-off panel for full access to front of panel door / breakers. My layout will also be designed in sections which come apart to allow for access to utilities. |
01_01_03-demolition_05.jpg View west from electrical cabinet. Drywall on the left to be removed. Whoever did the construction work in this area did not do a very good job. I'm relatively picky when it comes to this sort of thing and the craftsmanship was way below par in my book. It was a pleasure to remove all the stuff and now have a chance to replace it. |

01_01_03-demolition_06.jpg Looking southeast towards stairwell. All drywall and paneling is removed, revealing studs and boards nailed to cinder block foundation. The nailed boards are an issue, as I don't like the technique. I wanted to frame in a new wall w/ 2x3's but after consulting with my Father and Grandfather I decided to leave the boards and cover them with drywall after dry scrubbing the walls and washing them with bleach solution. There is evidence of water being in the basement at one time, but since we have lived there (4/5/02) we have experienced not a hint of a wet basement. |
01_01_03-demolition_07.jpg Another view south of staircase and studs. The furthest left stud may be removed for helix. |
01_01_03-demolition_08.jpg The dustiest part of the job - looking east. I decided to remove the ceiling after seeing dirt and debris dropping down from the ceiling at the wall in this picture whenever I tapped on the ceiling. It seems that when the addition to the first floor (immeditately behind the top of this wall) was put on, the contractor dropped A LOT of chippings and debris over the sill and onto the ceiling in the basement. Since the ceiling is sealed, there was no way for it all to dump down. Well, I didn't want to have bits of brick and stone dropping on my layout for the next ten years, so I elected to remove the ceiling. When it came down, the pounds of stone and dust came with it... *cough cough!* |
01_01_03-demolition_09.jpg View west from electrical cabinet of water heater. I removed the easternmost paneling from the cabinet. |
01_01_03-demolition_10.jpg View northeast. Still very dusty, now all paneling is down, and ceiling is next. |
01_01_03-demolition_11.jpg A closeup shot (eastward) of area where most of the rock/debris fell from. You can see the cinder blocks which were chipped away right at the top. There is concrete, insulation and brown paper stuffed in the cracks. I have no idea why this mess was made in making the addition to the house. |
01_01_03-demolition_12.jpg The pile close to the wall is all the debris from above. View is east. |
01_01_03-demolition_13.jpg Yours truly. |
01_01_03-demolition_14.jpg Another shot northeast. |
01_01_03-demolition_16.jpg View southwest. |
01_01_03-demolition_17.jpg The spliced kitchen drain pipe. This splice seems pretty sound so I won't disturb it. |
01_01_03-demolition_18.jpg Debris. |
01_01_03-demolition_19.jpg Wife Kristin inspects the dust. Area behind the door has been earmarked for storage and future darkroom use. I.e. no trains allowed. |
