The Georgetown Branch - Ben Sullivan
The Georgetown Branch: Gallery: Helix Construction begins

04/04/2005 - After working out a design for the helix using identical pieces (see Layout section), I evaluated it a little further and realized that each circle of the helix would have to have custom cuts & notches in order for it to fit in my small space. I decided this was not the way to go, and leaned toward a more traditional "cut plywood" form, with my own twist.

Due to the small space, I had to come up with a strange shape design for the plywood pieces. The result is a helix with wings, so to speak. The wings are where the supports for each level will be located. Check out the photos for more.

Pics The prototype.
Pics Cutting. I need a total of 12. I first drew them to scale and laid them out in Cadrail on a 4'x8' rectangle. I was able to fit 7 to a sheet.
Pics The stack. Next up I'll be measuring the angle rise of the grade and cutting risers to go on the wings for each level. I have metal braces to join each level of the helix which will be screwed in place.
