The Georgetown Branch - Ben Sullivan
The Georgetown Branch: Gallery:The William Duvall collection

11/29/2004 - I recently visited a Chevy Chase native who shot many gorgeous photos of the GB back in the 50's - 70's. Here are the slides, digitized. They are arranged in geographic order, beginning at MP 0 of the GB, Georgetown Jct. All photos are © William Duvall. The date in parentheses in the title is the development date printed on the slide. The slides, mainly KodaChrome, were scanned with a Polaroid SprintScan 120 at 4000dpi.

The cars will be switched down and through the junction crossovers and onto the GB. Caboose is C-2808. Other reporting marks are: B&O, B&O, SP, ?, ?, ?, SP, PRR.

Mr. Duvall maintains that this is a photo by Bobby Stevens, a native of Chevy Chase and a professional ballplayer for 1 season in Philadelphia. View is East.

Arsonists set fire to the trestle one day, severely damaging it. This photo is by G. Fred Stork.
Pics Rebuilding after Hurricane Agnes
(Oct 1972)

This trestle had a troubled history, and 1972 was a red letter year. One half of the trestle was washed away in the flooding following Agnes. The B&O rebuilt, this time out of steel beams. Some equipment was trapped in Georgetown for some time and really became a large part of the impetus for rebuilding the trestle. The rebuilding of 1972 was the last major rebuilding of the trestle until 2003 when the trestle was rehabilitated and reopened for pedestrian use.

This Curtiss Wright aerial shot is full of goodies. The GB runs across the bottom of the frame. What you see is a long string of cars on the passing siding. The team track is directly above it. In the lower left hand corner you can see 2 Capital Traction (ex. Chevy Chase Lake & Kensington Railway) cars waiting at the carbarn (out of sight). The line will be abandoned 4 years later. Heading up Connecticut Ave., you can make out the terminal loop for the line, right in front of the Chevy Chase Pool. The Chevy Chase station of the CCL&KRy is there too. To the north one can make out some gardens and houses; these belonged to workers for the CCL&KRy. In the upper right corner is the Columbia Country Club. To the upper left is a pavilion & park part of the original complex built to attract people to the area in the mid 1890's. Note the tall water tower just above the two street cars.

ca. 1890s

My favorite photo of all. Here we see the CCL&KRy's carbarn (large building w/ 5 pointed doors) and power house (behind, with smoke stack) which was the reason the GB was built in the first place! And, the real gem, in the background there is a train parked across Connecticut Ave! You can see the old style B&O boxcar with the B and then a white globe as an O. The GB was built in 1892 to this point to service this coal burning power plant for the town and electric railway. CCL&KRy #11 awaits passengers
Pics B&O 10-wheel "camel"
Built in 1873 @ B&O Mt. Clare shops. Mr. Duvall believes these were used in the building of the CCL&KRy in the mid 1890's.
Pics Chevy Chase swimming pool & CCL&KRy station
ca. 1940

Looking a bit worn, the station has been out of service for 5 years when this photo was taken. The swimming pool doesn't look that neat either. Note the interesting sign on the pool of a person diving. The old streetcar tracks have not yet been removed and are still embedded in the street. View is East.

View is East of the T.W. Perry building. part of the sign reads "T.W. PERRY, ...FUEL - OIL...". Note the boxcar on the siding behind the building. 9717 is an H-12-44 built in 1951 by Fairbanks-Morse.

The carbarn still stands, as a car dealership. Amazingly, the powerhouse is still standing (note smoke stack behind building). View is west. GB track pass next to the building, just out of sight to the left.
